The History of Kamloops

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area known as Kamloops was inhabited by the Shuswap; who form a part of the larger Salish language-speaking group of First Nations. In fact, the name Kamloops derives from the Shuswap word “Tk’emlups” meaning “meeting of the waters”.

European explorers arrived in 1811 and David Stewart is credited for setting up Fort Kamloops fur trading post in 1811. Since then, Kamloops has grown to become home to approximately 93,000 proud British Columbians.
